Notebooks have developed at an exponential rate since they were first developed. So much so that the only question to ask of whether to buy a notebook or a desktop is really where do you want to use it. The laptop has made it so much easier to manage a hectic lifestyle by allowing on the go productivity.

As notebooks are much smaller than desktops, the components inside them had to be made smaller and more ingeniously designed. To this extent upgrading a laptop is a much harder task than that of a desktop.

Special processors were designed to consume less power and produce less heat. One of the first on the market was the Intel Celeron chip. The drawback from the first wave of miniaturized processors was that they were a lot slower than their desktop brethren, however now with advances in manufacturing and technology the notebook has caught up.

The choice between whether or not to purchase a laptop or a desktop now is more a matter of preference than it is about power. Personally I’d always go for the desktop but that’s because I’m careless and couldn’t stand the thought of losing it.

The main part of the laptop is the processor this is the thing that completes the tasks you set the computer. Therefore the faster the processor runs the faster it can perform tasks. You will also find something called front side bus advertised with the processor this is the speed at which the processor can communicate with the system, in addition there is also something called the cache this determines how much information the processor can load at one time so the more of these two things the better!

The RAM is like a dinner plate that you can place tasks on for the processors to eat through. Therefore the more RAM, the bigger the plate and as such the more the processor can eat at a time. I hope you understand my little analogy there.

The graphics card part is pretty sneaky. A lot of notebooks come with built-in graphics this means there is no separate card dedicated to graphics. What you need to watch out for is that if an advertisement says there is 256Mb of graphics built-in then this 256Mb is taken from the RAM, meaning less space to feed the processor and as such slower performance. However if your laptop comes with plenty of RAM it won’t be an issue.
